Laboratory Automation, LIMS & Scientific Informatics Recruiting

Contract, contract-to-hire, and permanent professionals for LIMS development and administration, implementation and validation, LIS and HL7 interfaces, instrument integration, and laboratory automation. We recruit for the roles where platform experience and regulated-environment fluency separate a working hire from a stalled project.

25 years recruiting inside CLIA laboratories, diagnostics manufacturers, and GxP environments — the organizations that run these systems every day.

Where our laboratory informatics placements live

Each of these environments runs its systems differently. The platform, the regulatory burden, and the integration surface all change.

CLIA & Reference Laboratories

LIS analysts, interface engineers, and automation specialists for reference labs, specialty testing organizations, and hospital laboratories. These roles sit close to operations — they touch specimen workflow, instrument middleware, HL7 result routing, and the reporting that clinicians depend on.

CLIA Lab Recruiting →

Diagnostics & IVD Manufacturers

Software engineers, integration engineers, and informatics specialists building the data layer around diagnostic platforms — instrument connectivity, middleware, result interpretation, and the LIS interfaces customers require before they will buy the instrument.

IVD Recruiting →

Pharma, Biotech & CDMO (GxP)

LIMS administrators, validation engineers, and CSV/CSA consultants supporting QC and manufacturing laboratories under 21 CFR Part 11. Implementation, upgrade, and migration work here is validation work first and configuration work second.

CDMO/CMO Recruiting →

Life Science Tools & Instrument Vendors

Laboratory software engineers, automation engineers, and technical consultants at instrument and lab technology companies — people who can move between hardware capability, scripting and scheduling software, and the customer's actual bench workflow.

Life Science Tools Recruiting →

Research & Translational Laboratories

Scientific informatics professionals for discovery, translational, and biobanking environments — ELN and LIMS configuration, sample and data management, pipeline integration, and the workflow optimization work that follows a platform rollout.

Why this specialty is hard to staff

Laboratory informatics sits between IT, the bench, and quality. Very few candidates are credible in all three, and generalist technology recruiters cannot tell the difference.

Platform experience is not interchangeable.

LabWare, STARLIMS, LabVantage, SampleManager, and the vendor-specific platforms around them each have their own configuration model, scripting language, and upgrade behavior. A ten-year LabWare developer is not a drop-in STARLIMS resource, and a job description that says only "LIMS" will surface candidates who cannot do the work.

We screen to the platform, the version, and the specific module before we send anyone.

In regulated environments, implementation work is validation work.

A consultant who has configured a LIMS but never written a validation protocol, never worked under change control, and never faced an audit will slow a GxP project down rather than move it. CSV and CSA experience, 21 CFR Part 11 fluency, and data integrity discipline are screening criteria, not nice-to-haves.

For QC and manufacturing laboratories, this is usually the single biggest predictor of whether a hire works out.

Interface and integration engineers are a separate talent pool again. HL7 messaging, ASTM instrument protocols, middleware platforms, and LIS-to-EMR routing require someone who can read a spec and also stand in a lab at 6am when results stop flowing. Strong interface engineers are usually found inside laboratories and diagnostics vendors, not on general software job boards.

That is the network we have spent 25 years building.

Laboratory automation and robotics candidates sit between engineering and science. Liquid handling, scheduling software, track systems, and total lab automation demand someone who understands both the mechanics and the assay running on them.

Industrial automation engineers rarely translate cleanly. Bench scientists rarely have the software depth. The candidates who bridge both are a small, well-networked group.

Most of this work is project-shaped, which is why we staff it three ways. An implementation, upgrade, or migration has a defined start and end and is usually best served by contract or contract-to-hire consultants.

Ongoing administration, support, and integration ownership is usually a permanent hire. We will tell you which one your situation actually calls for, even when that is the smaller engagement for us.

Generalist IT staffing firms treat these searches as ordinary application-development requisitions. They submit ERP developers for LIMS roles, integration engineers with no healthcare messaging background for HL7 work, and software testers for validation positions.

The submittals look reasonable on paper and fail in the technical screen. Knowing why is most of the job.

We recruit where these systems actually run

Connexis has spent 25 years inside CLIA laboratories, diagnostics manufacturers, life science tools companies, and CDMOs — the organizations that buy, implement, validate, and live with these platforms. Our laboratory informatics work grew directly out of those relationships, which means we are sourcing from operating laboratories and vendor implementation teams rather than from job-board keyword matches.

How we scope an engagement

What the first two weeks look like when you bring us a LIMS or automation requirement.

ENGAGEMENT MODEL · CONTRACT, CONTRACT-TO-HIRE & PERMANENT

From requirement to shortlist

Scoping — We start with the platform and the version, not the job title. Which LIMS or LIS, which modules, which integrations, which regulatory framework the environment operates under, and whether the work is a defined project or an ongoing seat. That conversation usually reshapes the requisition. A request for a "LIMS developer" often turns out to be an integration engineer, a validation lead, or a configuration analyst — and the search changes completely depending on which.

Search — We source from operating laboratories, diagnostics and instrument vendors, and vendor implementation and partner teams rather than from open job-board applicants. Candidates are screened against the specific platform, module, and integration surface, plus the regulatory context — GxP, CLIA, 21 CFR Part 11 — and against the engagement type, since strong contract consultants and strong permanent hires are frequently different people with different motivations.

Submittal — You receive a short, qualified slate with a written summary of each candidate's platform depth, integration and validation experience, availability, and rate or compensation expectation. If we do not believe we can fill the role, we say so early rather than sending volume. Search volume in this specialty is genuinely limited, and we would rather be useful once than busy repeatedly.

What you get
  • Candidates screened to the specific platform, version, and module — not to the word "LIMS"
  • Contract, contract-to-hire, and permanent options scoped to the actual shape of the work
  • Validation and regulatory context assessed up front for GxP and CLIA environments
  • A direct answer on feasibility before you commit time to a search

Frequently asked questions about LIMS and laboratory automation recruiting

Common questions from employers hiring in laboratory informatics.

Do you place contract consultants as well as permanent employees?

Yes — contract, contract-to-hire, and permanent. Implementations, upgrades, migrations, and validation efforts are typically contract or contract-to-hire because the work has a defined end date. Administration, support, and integration ownership are usually permanent. If you are unsure which you need, that is a reasonable first conversation to have with us.

Which LIMS platforms do you recruit for?

LabWare, STARLIMS, LabVantage, and SampleManager most often, along with other commercial and in-house platforms, ELN systems, and the LIS products used in clinical laboratories. We screen to the platform and version rather than treating LIMS experience as generic, because configuration models and scripting environments differ enough that they are not interchangeable.

Can you support validated GxP and 21 CFR Part 11 environments?

Yes. We recruit CSV and CSA practitioners, validation leads, and quality systems analysts for regulated laboratories, and we screen implementation and configuration candidates for validation experience rather than assuming it. For GxP and CLIA environments, regulatory fluency is usually the difference between a hire who accelerates the project and one who becomes an audit finding.

Do you support remote, hybrid, and onsite requirements?

All three. A meaningful share of LIMS development, configuration, and validation work can be performed remotely, while instrument integration, automation, and go-live support usually require time onsite. Telling us the split up front materially widens or narrows the candidate pool, so we ask about it early rather than at offer stage.
