A significant leadership transition

Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group, Inc., a physician-owned pathology practice in Southern California, needed a successor to an administrator preparing to retire after more than 20 years with the organization.

Connexis partnered with the practice president on the search, led by Charles Bishop Jr. The mandate was to recruit a Chief Operating Officer/Group Administrator capable of leading the practice's business and administrative operations while working closely with its physician owners and board.

Responsibility across the business

The position carries a broad executive scope: finance, budgeting, billing and revenue cycle; human resources, payroll, benefits and retirement plans; hospital and vendor contracts; insurance and compliance; and facilities, leases and real estate assets.

The practice includes 20 pathologists and serves approximately 20 hospital locations in Southern California. Its administrator must coordinate across physician leadership, employees, hospital partners, laboratory leaders, and outside advisors. Physician reporting remains with the practice's medical leadership.

The leadership profile

The search called for a leader with financial judgment, experience managing physician relationships, and the ability to oversee a complex healthcare business. The job description emphasized translating board decisions into operating plans, managing the full range of administrative functions, and remaining personally involved in important business details.

With a long-tenured executive preparing to retire, the position also offered an opportunity for a planned transition and transfer of institutional knowledge. The role was designed to allow remote leadership with periodic travel to Southern California.
